Guidance & Student Services

The personnel of the Technical Education Guidance Department hold advanced degrees in counseling. The guidance staff works with students, parents, sending schools, outside agencies and employers to assist the students’ in educational planning, personal counseling, and career planning.

  • INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING
Interaction between a counselor and a student occurs in an environment in which the student may freely explore ideas, feelings, and behaviors. Counselors respect the privacy of information, always considering actions in terms of the rights, integrity, and welfare of students. Law and ethical standards obligate the designated school personnel to report and to refer cases where a person’s welfare is in jeopardy.
  • CAREER AND COLLEGE PLACEMENT
A career and college placement counselor is particularly instrumental in assisting students in college planning, placement, and providing career awareness such as:
    • Facilitate the college application process along with post-secondary alternatives
    • Provide the information on appropriate placement tests, transcripts, and the scholarship process
    • Serve as the liaison for military and post-secondary technical training, assisting senior level internship programs, and the primary contact for college articulation credits
    • Assist in helping students to develop good interviewing techniques, acquiring ethical behavior for promoting success in the workplace, and understanding techniques for evaluating personal success in the job
  • CLASSROOM GUIDANCE ACTIVITIES
Topics may include long range planning for students with regard to further education and appropriate technical choice. Counselors may also be asked by classroom teachers to assist in particular classroom units.
  • SMALL GROUP COUNSELING
Small group counseling or support groups help students when going through a transition, crisis, or a concern common to all members.
